What are Gout Foods to Avoid?

Gout can be triggered by diet. Gout can also be caused by other factors, but certain foods and drinks, such as those high in purines, are known to contribute to gout attacks. It is important to know which foods are best to avoid in order to prevent future flare-ups and manage your condition. Purines are the most likely to trigger an attack by causing a spike in blood urates levels. Purines are chemicals that are naturally found in the body and in certain foodstuffs. Purines are broken down by the digestive system and converted to uric acid or urate.

Purine Foods

There are some foods that are high in purines, which are known to be risk foods. These include organ meats, liver, kidneys, and heart. Some of these items are not compatible with recent research on healthy eating habits. These include most seafood, shellfish, and oily fish like mussels, sardines, and mussels. These foods are touted as being good for your heart health but are also known to be a problem with gout.

Red wine can also be bad for gout. Red wine is relatively low in purine levels, while beer is extremely high and can lead to gout attacks. Surprisingly, carbonated soft drinks with artificial sweetness fare no better. They have an above-average pH level and should be avoided or at the very least, moderately reduced. It is important to note that many processed foods and those with artificial sweeteners are risk foods for gout. This includes most sweets, jellies and white pasta.

Gout Attacks

If you are susceptible to gout attacks, it is best to avoid these foods completely or to take a calculated risk and eat small amounts. The question is, what foods can you eat to avoid gout? Moderation is the key word here. You don’t have to avoid all foods, but you should be careful about what you eat. Anchovies, salmon, anchovies, scallops, and haddock all have similar purines levels but are relatively safe in MODERATION. Most fruits and vegetables are good for you. In fact, some foods like cherries can have a positive effect on your purine levels.
