What are safe Grandma’s Arthritis Remedies?

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID’s), corticosteroids and anti-TNF (tumour-necrosis factor) treatment are all common options for arthritis. DMARD’s, which are well-known for their side-effects, are also available. The sheer number of chemicals we are willingly putting into already fragile bodies is not good for us or our health. What would our grandparents think? What would our grandparents do? The simple answer is that they would go to the garden or pantry to find a herb or vegetable.

Natural Remedies

Here are some of the remedies our ancestors used to ease their sore joints.

  • Let’s first look at the pantry. Mustard was a popular treatment for joint pain. The popular condiment is made from the seeds of yellow or white mustard (sinapis alba). Mustard plasters were popular for treating arthritis, chest congestion, bronchitis, and sore muscles. Mix one part mustard powder with two parts flour to make a mustard plaster. Add warm water to create a soft paste. Spread the paste onto a clean towel. To cover the paste, fold the towel in half. Fold it again to secure the paste. Finally, place the towel on the affected joint. Allow the mustard plaster to work for about 15 minutes. If the plaster feels uncomfortable, remove it immediately. After treatment, wash the area gently with lukewarm soap and dry it. It is important that the mustard paste not come in contact with the skin.
  • Epsom salts were used as a general arthritis treatment in the bath. The bath will reduce joint stiffness and inflammation by adding four tablespoons of Epsom salts.
  • Castor oil has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory qualities. Castor oil can be used to treat arthritis by being rubbed into the affected joints. Castor oil can also be used to treat arthritis. Two tablespoons of castor oil were boiled and mixed with fresh orange juice. This should be taken every morning with an empty stomach.
  • There are many herbs and vegetables in the garden that can soothe arthritis pain. Comfrey, also known by knitbone, has been used for centuries to treat a variety of ailments. It has antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and anti-fungal qualities. Comfrey can be used to make a poultice. It will reduce inflammation and draw out toxins. Make a poultice by chopping the comfrey. Then, blend it in a blender until you have a fine paste. Mix the paste in a bowl. Add flour to form a stiff dough. Knead until smooth. Make the poultice using old sheets. Add the comfrey paste in the middle. Wrap the dough to form neat squares that are about an inch thick. After the poultice has dried, wash the area with warm soapy water. Dry the area. You can make multiple poultices and freeze them for later. You can simply put them in a bag that seals and then place them in the freezer. You can also make a lazy poultice using the leaves. Simply bruise them, wrap them around your aching joints and secure them with clingfilm.
  • Cabbage is a great poultice for arthritis. Cabbage is part of the same family as mustard, and has anti-inflammatory qualities. To make a simple cabbage poultice, simply use a rolling pin to smash the leaves and wrap the leaves around your joint. Cover the area with a gauze bandage, and let it rest for at least one night. You can also freeze the cabbage leaves and place them directly on the joint for immediate relief.
  • To help relieve arthritis, you can switch from applying herbs and vegetables to the joints to vegetables that can be eaten. Potato juice is an alkaline liquid that will dissolve uric acid for those with gout. Leave a potato in a glass water overnight to soften the cubes. The starchy water is ready for you the morning after breakfast. It’s not very tasty, but if your nose is open while you drink it, it won’t taste so bad. This is because your taste buds and your olfactory receptors work together.
  • Onions and garlic have anti-inflammatory properties. The best results are achieved when raw, in salads, salsas, or sandwiches. Strong onions are better than weak ones. To stop tears, peel them under running waters.
