Are There Foods That Cause Gout?

Gout is a form of arthritis that occurs when uric acids starts accumulating in joints. The result is severe pain. Gout attacks are often caused by a lack of adequate elimination of uric acid. Consuming foods with purine tends to increase the level of uric acid. Gout can be caused by foods with high cholesterol and fat. These foods can cause sudden gouty attacks. These foods may be your favorite, but they both contain high levels of nitrates or purines. These foods can also dehydrate your body quickly due to their high sodium content.

Uric Acid

They can cause blood to stop flowing properly and uric acid to build up in the joints. Hot dogs, on the other hand contain higher levels of purine and animal protein. Gout is not a common problem with all seafood. Avoid certain shellfish and fish like shrimp, crab, and salmon. These shellfish and fish contain high levels of chemical purine. Even though salmon contains essential omega 3 oils it is better to supplement them.

Salmon has twice the amount of purine as poultry. White meat has less purine than red meat. If you have gout, it is best to limit your intake. It is a good idea to consult a doctor or nutritionist before deciding on the appropriate amount to consume. Gout patients have experienced sudden attacks when they ate chicken, but no reports have been made about turkey. You should always eat poultry, depending on your health.

Alcohol

Gout patients should not be allowed to consume alcoholic beverages. These drinks contain moderate to high levels of purines. Recent studies have shown that beer may be the cause of gout. Beer has more purines than wine, with a total of 8 times as many. Gout patients should avoid vegetables and dairy products, other than poultry and alcoholic drinks. Vegetables such as peas, spinach, asparagus and mushrooms are all good options.

High levels of purines are “blacklisted” foods which can cause gout. Gout sufferers should avoid venison, squirrel and goose, as they contain high levels of purines. They are not steroid-filled meat products but should be avoided by gout patients. A patient can now plan a healthy diet after learning about the foods that can cause gout. Include carbohydrate-enriched fruits and veggies.

Most doctors and nutritionists recommend a combination or foods to reduce severe gout pain. Patients are asked to drink 8-10 glasses of water daily to maintain their body’s health. This helps to prevent crystallization of the uric acid in the joints. Gout can also be prevented by living a healthy lifestyle.
