Are there Natural Alternatives for Treating Gout?

Gout relief medication is effective, but can have side effects. These side effects can be difficult to identify. It is clear that mainstream medication can be used to treat gout attacks. NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug), Colchicines, or Corticosteroids are the most common medications prescribed by your doctor for a gouty attack. These medications help to relieve the symptoms of gout. Redness, swelling, stiffness and inflammation are all signs of a gout attack. To prevent recurring gout attacks, your doctor may prescribe uric acid-reducing drugs such as Allopurinol or Probenecid.

Side Effects

These drugs work well when the right dose is determined. They can cause nausea, diarrhea, allergic reactions and joint pain. You must also take them long-term as they only work while you are taking them. One word of caution: Never stop taking any medication, even if side effects suddenly occur. As you can see, more gout sufferers are turning to natural gout remedies rather than taking drug-based gout relief medication. Natural remedies can reduce the symptoms of gout and lower uric acid levels to prevent further attacks.

Natural Treatment

  • Cherries – are natural anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and heart healthy foods. You can eat between 30-40 calories per day.
  • Bromelain supplements – act as NSAIDs. Maximum daily intake is 2 x 500mg.
  • Celery seeds – These natural anti-inflammatory properties act as NSAIDs. Boil 1 tablespoon of seeds in 2 cups of water until they are soft. Take 1/2 cup of the seeds and consume it 4 times per day until your symptoms disappear. Celery seeds are diuretic and should not be consumed by pregnant women or people with kidney problems.

Remember

Purines are chemical compounds that produce uric acids. Gout sufferers who need to lower their uric acid levels should eliminate foods high in purines. At the very least, they should be drastically reduced. These fall under the general headings of fatty red and poultry, seafood, legumes, and legumes. Each food has a different level of purines. To find the best diet plan for you, you need to take a look at your current diet and compare it with these foods.
