Can A Low Uric Acid Diet Stop Gout Attacks?

Gout attacks can be the most severe and painful episodes a person will experience. Gout attacks can strike suddenly, often at night, and can leave the affected joint red and swollen, leaving the sufferer in complete pain. Gout attacks can be stopped by a low-uric diet. Gout attacks or recurrences are possible if you have ever had an attack or gout infection in the family. Gout attacks can be very debilitating and can leave you housebound or out of work. What can you do to prevent a gout flare up? It is best to adjust your diet to low uric acid.

Prevention

Prevention is better than cure, so make changes as soon as possible. Gout is caused when there is too much uric acid in your bloodstream. Exceedive uric acid builds up in the joints and connective tissue after it reaches a certain saturation point. These crystals form and cause painful, swollen joints. Gout usually affects the big toe, one of the foot or ankle joints. However, it can also affect any other joints in the body. Gout is most commonly found in the feet because they are farthest from the heart.

Also, uric acid crystallizes in colder temperatures. Purine is found in our tissues and in many foods we eat in western diets, including animal protein. Uric acid is naturally formed when the body processes it. If we eat a high amount of purine-rich foods, our uric acids levels can rise. This makes it more difficult for the kidney to remove excess uric acids in a timely manner. The excess uric acids float around in the bloodstream until they become saturated. This is when uric acid crystals form in the joints.

Remember

You have two options to address high levels of urine: either speed up kidney processes so that uric acids are processed quickly and expelled quickly, or reduce the amount. A low-uric acid diet is an effective way to achieve this. It doesn’t take long to get used to a low-uric acid diet. Avoid foods high in purine, and replace them with foods with low purine levels. This type of diet should be avoided red meat, processed meats, shellfish, and yeast extracts. Gout-friendly foods should include cereals, fruits, vegetables, juices, tomatoes, and other green vegetables.
