Can Coffee cause Gout Attacks?

You might feel discomfort or pains in certain areas of your body if you suffer from chronic gout. If this is you, then you should reduce or stop drinking coffee. Open Wikipedia, search for “caffeine”, then click on another tab and “wikipedia” the word “purine”. You will be surprised to see the hidden purine in the caffeine structure if you look at the molecular structures diagrams for both caffeine and purine. Caffeine contributes more purine to your body, and more uric acid leads to more frequent episodes of gout.

Uric Acid Level

The crystallization of excessive uric acids in your body is what causes the pain and soreness you feel now. Gout is a painful condition that occurs when uric acid crystals build up in your joints. You will feel the strange pain or soreness if the tiny uric acids crystals form near your muscles or the tendons. What causes all this caffeine? The main reason caffeine can cause some of these pains is not because it adds purine to your body.

It is Diuretic, which means it draws water out of your body. Do you notice that after drinking a few cups of coffee you have a tendency to go to the toilet more often or feel thirstier? This is because your body has used all the water available to flush out the caffeine (which the body considers poisonous).

Body Fluids

The concentration of your body fluids will rise if the total water in your body drops. The blood will become thicker, darker and more dense (you should have noticed this on your blood test), and the same goes for the interstitial and synovial fluids. The saturation point is the point at which the concentration of uric acids reaches a certain level. This will cause uric acids to crystallize, forming tiny urate crystals that are identified by the body’s immune system as foreign invaders.

This will trigger a defense mechanism that causes gouty inflammation. Apart from the muscle soreness and muscle pains, most people feel tired or sleepy throughout the day. That could be why you drink so much coffee. But, you need to understand the root cause of your tiredness and sleepiness. It is the thickened blood! Your blood loses water, and becomes thicker and less fluid. This will reduce the efficiency of the body in providing nutrients and oxygen to its cells.

Conclusion

Your brain loses focus when it doesn’t have the energy it needs, and productivity drops. Your body is in acidosis. To stop your health from deteriorating, you need to make some changes in your lifestyle and diet. If you don’t act now, it could lead to more serious health problems such as diabetes and heart disease.
