Nightshade Food
My wife and I recently had a short discussion about nightshade plants. We discussed the health risks associated with eating nightshade-rich foods. Even though I had a basic understanding of nightshade foods and wanted to know more about why there are so many health concerns associated with them, I was unable to find any solid information. I discovered that many articles, blog entries, and comment pages seem to disparage nightshades and encourage not eating them. This is a serious mistake considering the health benefits of these foods. Nightshade (or classification) refers to one of the 2,800 species of plants.
These include tomatoes, eggplants, tomatoes and paprika, as well as potatoes and peppers (all other varieties than black pepper), tomatoes, paprika, tobacco, and tobacco. These plants are distinguished by the presence of alkaloids, a substance that is unique to them. Alkaloids are nitrogen-containing substances that plants produce to protect themselves against insects. Alkaloids are a natural defense mechanism nightshade plants create to protect themselves.
Alkaloids
There are five basic types of alkaloids that have been studied and are associated with potential health problems. 1) Steroid alkaloids can be found in tomatoes and potatoes (2) Tropane alkaloids (3), Pyrrolizidine 3), Pyrrolizidine 4 and 5; (5) Nicotine alkaloids (those found in tobacco, egg plants, and green tomatoes) The majority of my research focused on steroidalkaloids and the possible health effects they have. One thing I want to stress is that only people with an alkaloid sensitivity, or pre-existing joint conditions such as arthritis, or gout, are likely to experience the negative health effects. Although nightshade foods can cause adverse effects in some people due to their alkaloid content they are usually not harmful. However, steroid alkaloids can block an enzyme in nerve cells called Cholintesterase.
This is basically a substance that acts to cause a specific chemical reaction/ function to occur. Steroid alkaloids can cause muscle spasms, stiffness and inflammation in the body. This is only possible in people with a known sensitivity to steroid alkaloids or who have a diet high in this type of alkaloid (potatoes, tomatoes). There is also a risk of irritation of the digestive tract walls, which can lead to more serious conditions like ulcers, diverticulitis, polyps, and other serious conditions like diverticulitis.
Did you know?
People with arthritis or other digestive problems should avoid nightshade foods and limit their intake. In 1980, Rutgers University conducted a study that found potato alkaloids (steroidalkaloid type) caused a decrease in bone mineral content and soft tissue mineralization in people who ate a high-potatoes diet. This was not due to a reduction in fat stores, but rather a decrease in body mass. This research showed that these alkaloids could cause calcium loss in the bones and excess calcium depositing in the soft tissues. Although some foods such as eggplants and green tomatoes contain nicotine alkaloids, most health professionals don’t consider it a health risk.
This is important because there are many health concerns about nicotine in tobacco. You should also keep in mind that there are many other additives to cigarettes, including tobacco, which can cause health problems. Also, these substances can be inhaled through inhaled smoke, which can lead to a decrease in lung function. Because of the small amount of nicotine in eggplants, there are many health benefits to eating them. Nightshades should be avoided if they have green spots or sprouted. Sprouts and green spots are a sign of high alkaloid levels, which can lead to bitter tasting sprouted potatoes.
Nightshades
Cooking nightshades can reduce the alkaloid content by up to 40% to 50%. This usually makes it less likely that people with known allergies will consume too much alkaloid. It is important to be aware of the possible effects of nightshades on your body, not just to avoid them altogether. It is possible to make better choices and improve your diet by being more aware of the ingredients and how they are made. I don’t believe it is necessary to eliminate nightshades from your diet, unless you have a severe allergy. You also won’t reap the health benefits these foods can bring. One of the many benefits tomatoes offer is their high level of vitamins A, C and antioxidants.
They are rich in chromium, which helps regulate blood sugar levels. They also have high amounts of potassium and B vitamins. Research also shows that eating seedless tomatoes can reduce the risk of gallstones and kidney disease. The health benefits of peppers include their high levels of antioxidants, which can help reduce the risk of developing cancer and support healthy immune system function. Peppers are rich in vitamin K and contain a good amount of fiber. A half cup of sliced red bell peppers has 1 gram of fiber. It is best to see a healthcare practitioner if you are concerned about alkaloid sensitivity. It is important to consult your healthcare provider before you change or add anything to your diet.
