How to identify the four Stages of Gout?

Gout is a painful type of arthritis that many people don’t realize. Gout can develop when uric acid builds up in the body. The joints begin to develop sharp, jagged crystals made from uric acid buildup. This is particularly common in the big toes. Tophi, another type of uric acid deposits, appear as lumps underneath a person’s skin. Kidney stones are another painful manifestation of uric acids buildup. This time, it is in the kidneys. Gout pain is most common in the area of the big toe. Gout attacks in this area of the foot are quite common. Gout-inflicted toes will be sensitive and tender to the touch.

Stages

  • Stage 1: Asymptomatic hyperuricemia – These are the “pre-pain”, stage in which symptoms are not yet evident but gout is developing. This stage is when the body’s level is high. It is possible to stop the acid from precipitating from blood or crystallizing in the joints and kidneys.
  • Stage 2: Acute gout (or Acute Gouty Arthritis) – This is when gout can cause severe damage to the body. The body’s uric acid levels are so high that it is impossible for the blood to maintain a dissolved form. The uric acid crystallizes and settles within the joints. Gout symptoms such as swelling and pain are now evident. Attacks usually occur at night and can last for several weeks if the patient is not careful. The pain will continue to worsen if the sufferer refuses treatment.
  • Stage 3: Intercritical gout – This is the stage in which a gout attack stops. Because the immune system is stabilizing, symptoms will disappear. The patient must seek treatment immediately if they have not already. The condition will get worse if it is not.
  • Stage 4: This is the final stage of gout. This stage is when the kidneys and joints are most likely to have suffered permanent damage. Crippling can be caused by the extreme pain experienced by the deteriorated joint. In severe cases, kidney failure and death can occur. Gout can be fatal if it is not treated early. It is essential that you seek medical attention immediately you notice any symptoms.
