How to prevent chronic Knee Joint Pain?

The knee is an important part of the body, something most of us can agree on. However, if you suffer from chronic knee pain, you can take comfort in knowing that this problem affects thousands of people around the world. Chronic knee pain is a condition in which the pain in the knee becomes worse over time. There are many causes of chronic knee pain. The older you get, the more likely you are to develop them. Two things can cause chronic knee pain: excessive tension/strain on your knees and diseases.

Knee Pain

Understanding the structure of the knee is essential to understand the causes of chronic knee pain. Although this may not be how your doctor describes it, I can tell you that I don’t really understand half of the terms he uses. The knee is a body part made up bones, tendons and ligaments. It also contains thickened cartilage called meniscus. There are fluid-filled sacs called bursae. Chronic knee pain can be caused by serious damage to any of these structures.

Tendinitis, Meniscus tear, and ligament injury are the most common injuries that result from too much tension/straining of the knees. Tendinitis and Ligament injury can be treated with rest, warm water, and ice packs. A meniscus tear, which is more serious, will require an xray to be diagnosed and minor surgery to correct.

Causes

Chronic knee pain can be caused by arthritis, rheumatoid, gout, and osteoarthritis. Gout and rheumatoid are both causes of inflammation. This can lead to a buildup of fluids at the back of your knee which causes chronic pain. Osteoarthritis, while non-inflammatory, causes the cartilage to degenerate. Lupus, a connective tissue disorder, and Bursitis are other diseases that can affect the knee.

These conditions can be linked to increased tension in the knees due to excessive kneeling or overuse. These diseases can be treated with antiinflammatory medication. If the pain is not too severe, an aspirin can usually be used to control it. If the symptoms persist, it is advisable to consult a doctor. I was taught that prevention is better than treatment when I was a child. I want to share some simple steps that can be taken to prevent chronic knee pain. When doing activities that require prolonged standing, it is important to wear footwear that is both comfortable and supports the legs.
