General information

Boswellia serrata can be called many things, including Salai, Indian incense, Frankicense or Boswellia. It is part of the botanical family Burseraceae. Although the tree is indigenous to India, it can also be found in North Africa and the Middle East. The tree’s resin has been used in India, China, and other North African countries for thousands of years for its health benefits.

Boswellia resin is used in traditional ceremonies to burn the plant’s resin. This is why the name Indian incense was given. The resins’ smoke is believed to induce a state of spirituality, prayer, meditation, and relaxation. These resins are also included in the official Chinese and Indian Ayurvedic medicine pharmacopoeia because of their medicinal properties. Ayurveda and traditional Chinese medicine attribute many health benefits to it.

Boswellia is also mentioned in Avicenna’s Canon of Medicine. This work dates back to 1050. This book records the theories of Hippocrates, Dioscoride and Galen, who were among the most influential authors in medicine. It is important to note that not all what is called “Boswellia”, come from Boswellia serrata. The genus Boswellia has approximately 20 species. Boswellia frereana, Boswellia carterii, Boswellia papyrifera, and Boswellia sacra are other varieties.

Boswellia composition

Boswellia is an anti-inflammatory herb. Boswellia’s benefits and properties are particularly helpful in treating inflammatory joint, respiratory, and intestinal diseases. Inflammation-related diseases are treated with the tree’s resin.

Boswellia resin is primarily composed of triterpene acid, also known as boswellic acid. It also contains plant steroids, tannins, and uronic acids. There are also phenols and essential oils, as well as glycosaminoglycans. Many of these elements can be used as powerful natural antioxidants. These components and active ingredients are what we owe boswellia’s health benefits. What are its properties?

Properties and Benefits of boswellia

Anti-inflammatory properties

Boswellic acid, which is a tree endemic in this area and the various forms of it, has important anti-inflammatory properties. Its resin (frankicense) has non-steroidal effects.[1] Health professionals have studied the analgesic effects. Patients who receive treatment with boswellia have a higher tolerance to pain.[2] More research is underway to determine its exact analog effectiveness.

Combating inflammatory bowel disease

Boswellia’s anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and immunomodulatory properties make it useful in fighting intestinal inflammation. This is where the plant’s strengths really shine. It is known to reduce intestinal inflammation by improving the integrity and permeability of the intestinal walls. Supplementation protects the epithelium endothelial cells by doing this. Boswellia is an adjuvant treatment to inflammatory bowel diseases.[3]

Boswellia, a plant known to treat symptoms of Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, has been proven effective. It can help sufferers improve their quality and decrease pain. Boswellia can reduce symptoms by up to 70% for these patients.

Osteoarthritis and other inflammatory joint diseases can be treated

Boswellia has been proven to be extremely effective in osteoarthritis patients who have taken it for several weeks. The plant is known to improve joint mobility and decrease pain.[4] It has one major advantage: there are no side effects. It can be used in combination with bromelain for treatments lasting up to six months. This combination allows for improved joint performance, even in daily activities. These benefits are especially important for those joints most affected by osteoarthritis symptoms and their symptoms.[5]

Asthma and respiratory inflammation can be treated

Boswellia has many benefits. Boswellia has been shown to significantly reduce the severity of chronic obstructive lung disease (COPD). This condition is characterized by progressive obstruction of the airways that leads to decreased oxygenation. It improves breathing.[6]

Boswellia can be used to treat asthma symptoms. The resin’s immunomodulatory as well as anti-inflammatory properties are especially useful for asthma sufferers. After two weeks of supplementation, asthma attacks can be reduced.[7]

Properties related to immunity

The Indian tree’s resin has immunomodulating and immunostimulant properties.[8] It acts on our immune system. It boosts the immune system’s activity and enhances its defenses. It regulates its activity and makes it more effective in all situations.

Boswellia active ingredients are known to stimulate lymphocyte proliferation. This means that they increase the production of immune cells.[9] Boswellia extract regulates the body’s release of cytokines and increases phagocytosis via macrophages. It is therefore beneficial in chronic inflammation cases.

Another benefit is that the antioxidants found in this plant help improve the functions of the body by helping to eliminate free radicals. The plant also has significant viral activity. It can be used externally to treat boils, acne, and fungal infections.

Boswellia, diabetes, and weight gain

Clinical studies have shown that boswellia serrata causes a significant drop of fasting blood sugar, as well as a drop in triglyceride levels and glycated hemoglobin.[10] It is also known that hyperglycaemia can cause fat deposition in your liver and a decrease of HDL cholesterol. Boswellia supplementation can be used to help diabetics increase their HDL (good) cholesterol to the exclusion of LDL (bad).

Studies on obesity have been conducted using the hypoglycaemic, anti-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory properties of this tree. The tree’s resin can reduce food cravings and lower pancreatic lipase. Boswellia supplementation reduces weight gain, improves biological parameters like insulin levels, triglycerides and blood sugar levels, and results in a decrease in visceral fat. It can also be used as a supplement to reduce liver congestion and hypertrophy in adipocytes.

Virtues about menstruation

Boswellia can be used to alleviate heavy and painful periods in women who are suffering from severe pain. Boswellia can reduce the length of your menstrual cycle and improve the quality of life for women who use it. It has more benefits than just taking ibuprofen.[11]
