Revmatologija je specializirano medicinsko področje, ki se ukvarja z diagnosticiranjem in zdravljenjem revmatičnih bolezni. Revmatične bolezni ali revmatizem diagnosticiramo z anamnezo, telesnim pregledom ter ugotavljanjem genetskih označevalcev in protiteles v krvi.

Revmatolog je zdravnik, ki zdravi sklepni revmatizem. Je internist ali pediater, ki se je dodatno usposobil za diagnosticiranje (odkrivanje) in zdravljenje bolezni, ki prizadenejo sklepe, kosti, mišice, vezi in kite. Revmatizem ima veliko različnih simptomov. Te bolezni lahko povzročajo bolečino, otekanje, togost in lahko povzročijo deformacije sklepov. Simptome revmatizma zlahka opazimo.
Revmatolog je torej specialist za sklepe. Sodeluje s splošnim zdravnikom, potrdi njegovo diagnozo in lahko opravi nekatere medicinske posege, na primer punkcijo sklepnega izliva. Rheumatism is a generic term for all joint disorders. This can be osteoarthritis, arthritis, osteoporosis or autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis. These osteoarticular disorders are among the leading causes of disability and handicap.
