What are common Illnesses Elderly People experience?

We, those of us who are “in between”, are watching our parents suffer from many conditions. We must ensure that they get the proper care, not only because we fear they will have the same problems as them. Arthritis: This is not the right time to consider it “just” arthritis. It can have a serious impact on the quality of an older person’s life. It can make it more difficult to move and increase the likelihood of falling. It can lead to thinning bones. This can be fatal for seniors.

Take Note

  • COPD: A chronic obstructive lung disorder (COPD) can lead to serious breathing problems. The elder could become bedridden if they don’t get treatment. Even with treatment, it is possible that they will need supplemental oxygen.
  • Cognitive decline: There are many conditions that can lead to cognitive decline in an elderly. This problem can be caused by age-related atrophy of the brain, Alzheimer’s disease, and even necessary medications. It is possible to catch it early and avoid serious problems such as financial elder abuse, which we have been trying to avoid.
  • Diabetes: This is a condition where the body cannot use glucose or produce insulin. It can also lead to other diseases in the elderly. These include kidney disease, heart disease, and eye problems to name a few.
  • Gout: This is caused by a buildup in uric acid crystals. These crystals can build up in the kidneys and cause damage to the kidneys.
  • Heart Disease: According the CDC, heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women. It should be detected early to prevent damage to the heart. Modern tests can be used to help in this area.
  • Kidney Disease. As we age, our kidneys lose their ability filter out toxins from the blood. If caught early enough, dialysis can be made easier for the patient.
