What Causes Painful Joints?

As if pain weren’t enough, having it in your joints is even worse. Painful joints can cause distraction and make it difficult to do certain tasks. This can also affect your personal life, work, and home. The first step in getting rid of pain is to realize that it is only a symptom of a larger problem. It is impossible to treat painful joints if you don’t know the cause. Joint pain can cause swelling and tenderness that can be very bothersome. It can also cause bruising or restriction of movement. Redness and inflammation can also be present in certain conditions.

These symptoms can be a clue to the cause. Rheumatism, or arthritis in the joints, is the most common diagnosis. Osteoarthritis is an inflammation caused by the wear down of bone and cartilage. These types of arthritis, such as Rheumatoid Arthritis or Septic Arthritis, are most common in older adults. However, it doesn’t exclude other causes. Your doctor should be aware of any other causes for your pain. The next most common reason for painful joints is an injury to the ligament, cartilage, or bone in the joint.

This can be caused by an accident, sports, or outdoor activity. It is important to apply ice to the injured area if you feel any pain, swelling, or redness. To determine the extent of the injury and the best treatment, consult a doctor. Infectious diseases can also affect the area around your joints. These include, but not limited to, Lupus (or Systemic Lupus Erythematosus), chicken pox, mumps and the common flu. If you don’t treat these conditions, it can lead to more serious problems. If the pain is accompanied by a headache, rash, and tiredness, it could be Lyme disease.

Gout is a temporary condition that can sometimes be treated with diet changes. People who are overweight often experience joint and muscle pain. This is due to the extra pressure on their joints and surrounding muscles. These conditions can be helped by eating more fruits and vegetables and drinking 8 glasses of water daily. A good exercise program and a healthy diet will also help.

To determine the root cause of your pain, doctors will use a variety of methods. A physical exam will usually be performed, which includes your medical history and possible X-rays, MRIs, bone scans, and urine tests. This is the most important step. Make sure to discuss all options, as well the resulting diagnosis, with you physician in order to determine the best treatment options.


While pain relief is important, it is not the only thing that should be sought. Understanding and treating the root cause should be your top priority. If any of these symptoms are combined with fever, chills, severe headaches or upset stomach, please consult your doctor. This could indicate a more serious condition. The key to relieving pain is correct diagnosis.
