What Foods help clear up Gout?

Gout is a painful form of arthritis that occurs when high levels of uric acid in the blood cause crystals to form and build up around a joint.

It is important to understand how to lower uric acid levels by adopting new eating habits. The first step is to learn about foods rich in purines and to avoid them. Other complementary measures can also reduce gout attacks by reducing insulin resistance or by protecting the liver.

It is important to choose foods low in purines and to integrate them into your diet. By adding a good intake of vitamin C, Omega-3 and protective foods, you will have a much better chance of keeping gout attacks at bay and thus have a better quality of life.

Here what you should eat:

  • Fruits, especially red fruits such as strawberries, blueberries or cherries. Citrus fruits, including lemon, oranges, tangerines or grapefruit, all with a high alkalizing power, favorable to the reduction of uric acid. Grapes, apples and bananas are also among the fruits to be included in a diet to combat gouty arthritis.
  • Milk and dairy products, preferably with low fat content.
  • Nuts such as walnuts, almonds or hazelnuts.
  • Some vegetables, especially celery, potatoes, turnips, carrots, lettuce, leeks, zucchini,…

A gout diet can help reduce uric acid levels in the blood, but does not cure the disease. However, it can reduce the risk of recurrent and painful gout attacks, and may reduce the progression of joint damage.

People with gout who follow a gout diet also need to take medication or home remedies to control pain and reduce uric acid levels.
