What should I know about Gout?

Gout is more common in men than in women, unlike other forms of arthritis. Gout most often affects the big toe joint. Gout is fundamentally caused by a defect in the body’s internal chemistry. It is caused by uric acidsic crystals in both joints. The breakdown of chemicals that are derived from the genetic substance of cells creates uric acid. It is usually excreted in the urine. Uric acid can build up in the urine and form tiny crystals in the joints. The crystals can cause severe pain, inflammation, irritation and inflammation if they get into the joint space.

What is Gout?

Gout is a condition that can cause severe pain and irritation. Gout is most common in the large toe. However, it can also affect other joints like the ankles, knees, wrists, elbows, and hands. Gout can also affect the soft flesh in the ears, feet, and hands. In these cases, uric acid could crystallize into small, hard, white lumps known as the tophi. The joint will ache rapidly and then become red, inflamed and very painful. The pain will last for a while before subsiding and the joint will gradually return to normal.

Gout is four times more common in women than it is in men. Gout usually affects women after menopause, when women have less natural defense against the disease. Gout is manageable but not curable. If left untreated, it can lead to severe arthritis, high blood pressure, and kidney damage that could eventually prove fatal. Gout is more common in some people than in others. Some people’s metabolisms handle uric acid slowly. Other triggers include injury, infections, antibiotics, diuretics, water tablets, aspirin, and crash diets. Gout is not caused by food or drink. Gout can cause severe pain and should be treated immediately.

Gout Treatment

Gout treatment must be diagnosed accurately, even though symptoms may mimic other types of arthritis. How does gout actually develop? Gout can develop when the body produces too little uric acid or fails to excrete it. The excess acid builds up around the joints as crystals. Tophi deposits are small, hard lumps that can be felt in the skin and may cause inflammation or swelling. Gout can be caused by excessive consumption of rich foods like red meat, alcoholic drinks, such as red wine and port.
