Consider this: A tablespoon of Organic Raw Blue Agave contains 60 calories and 16g of sugar. One tablespoon of table sugar contains 53 calories and 14g of sugar. These simple statistics show that agave is superior to sugar. People, restaurants, and food manufacturers continue to promote agave as an excellent health food because of its low glycemicindex.

The glycemic indicator measures the amount sugar in blood after food and drink have been consumed. Table sugar, for instance, has a Glycemic Index of 58. Compare this with the glycemicindex of agave which is approximately 13 to 15. It’s a huge difference and it’s what grabs everyone’s attention. It is important to keep in mind that the glycemic indicator is only a useful tool. It doesn’t measure fructose which is the sweetening agent found in agave or high fructose corn syrup. The glycemic Index only provides half of the information needed to understand your body and make informed decisions about the healthiness or caloric sweetness of any caloric sweetener.

Both glucose and fructose can be used as sweeteners, but each body uses them differently. Sugary foods and drinks are metabolized into blood sugar. While small amounts of sugar are required for energy, excessive sugar levels in the blood can disrupt metabolism, increase insulin resistance, and cause fat storage. Fructose is the next. Fructose doesn’t get metabolized and therefore doesn’t raise blood sugar. Instead, fructose is taken straight to the liver, where it’s broken into triglycerides.

Hydration

There is a strong chance that you will get fat if you consume or drink a lot of fructose. A study on the effects of HFCS was published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. The study involved 85 adults aged 18 to 40. One quarter of the participants drank 0% of beverages containing HFCS. Another quarter drank 10%, another quarter 17.5%, and the least fortunate population group drank 25%. These results were shocking and impressive. The higher the doses of HFCS, LDL (lousy cholesterol), and triglycerides, respectively, the higher the levels of uric acid (linked to gout). In fact, the highest HFCS consumption group also experienced a slight weight gain in two weeks. High triglycerides, which is a risk factor for metabolic syndromes, is a group of poor health indicators that are common in heart disease, stroke, and diabetes.

Metabolic syndrome is closely associated with obesity and physical inactivity. It is expected to surpass smoking as the leading cause for heart disease. Fructose is the natural sweetener in fruits. Consuming raw fruits is safe as long as the fructose in them is consumed in small, fiber-rich quantities rather than in large, concentrated liquids. Fiber slows down the rate at which fructose is broken down and reduces its impact. Repeat it again and don’t forget. Agave syrup does not qualify as a healthy food. It can make you very sick and fat.
