What are Basic Facts about Knee Joint Pain?

People who are active, such as cyclists and runners, are more likely to experience knee joint pain. This condition can also affect those who do not engage in high-level training or sports. Although knee joint pain is more common in seniors, particularly women, it can also be experienced by people of all ages. It could be due to an injury such as a torn or ruptured ligament, or it may be caused by medical conditions such as arthritis, gout, or infections. Most cases of knee joint pain can be treated with self-care or physical therapy.

Symptoms

Common symptoms of knee joint pain are weakness, instability and stiffness around the knees. You may hear crunching sounds from your knees, or they may become stuck temporarily in a position that makes it difficult to straighten them. Redness and swelling around the knees can be signs of pain. The office environment can cause pain in the back and knees. Inactivity and sitting for longer periods of time in an office environment can cause knee joint pain.

Osteoarthritis

Age, genetics and other health conditions such as obesity play a significant role in determining if someone will develop osteoarthritis. People over 60 are more likely to develop osteoarthritis if they have a family history. Due to the high pressure on the joints, obesity can also increase the likelihood of osteoarthritis. Osteoarthritis can also be caused by back or knee injuries.

Physical therapy is a form of physical therapy that helps people with knee joint pain. It involves specific exercises that strengthen the knee muscles and increase flexibility. Topical medications can also be very effective for conditions such as muscular discomfort and knee joint pain. Because they can be applied externally and work locally, they are more effective and safer than oral medications. Topical medications can be safely used as many times as necessary and provide pain relief that is faster than oral analgesics.
