Scientifically, purines and their partner pyrimidines have been established as the building blocks for nucleic acid DNA and RNA. Although we may not know much about DNA andRNA, we do know that these nucleic acid have something to do the person’s genes. They are the genetic code, or the genetic information of all living species. There are some statements that not all genetic information is available in the genetic codes. Ted Page Ph.D. and Mary Coleman M.D. have found that autistic children share a common factor: an abnormality in the metabolism of purine or pyrimidine.

Although this piece of information was discovered 30 years ago, it was not pursued in depth because only a few laboratories were able to perform such tests on DNA and RNA. These two doctors found that certain subtypes of autism have high levels of uric acid in their urine. These autistic symptoms included disinterest in social contact, inability of communicating, repetitive actions like toe-walking or hand-flapping gestures, tendency to self-injure and high sensitivity to auditory reactions. There was also a notable low level reaction to pain. These symptoms were often relieved by low-purine diets.

What Causes Uric Acid Levels to Increase? An enzyme called uricase breaks down the uric acid found in purines. A deficiency of this enzyme can lead to high levels of uric acid. The body’s inability to produce the enzyme uricase is what causes a rise in uric acid levels. Further tests and research have shown that vegetarians have low levels of uric acid due to the absence of meat in their diets as well as the high intake of vegetables.

We should eat less meat and more vegetables as our best dietary choices. It is not recommended to eliminate meat entirely as the body still needs some of its nutrients. If you eat lean meats or poultry, the recommended amount of protein is 15%. Get more nutrients from carbohydrates, which can be found in vegetables, fruits, whole grains, cereals, and other foods. Moderate amounts of coffee, tea, and chocolate beverages is permissible.

Tomatoes, blueberries, fresh strawberries, fresh cherry, bananas and oranges are all highly beneficial fruits. Red cabbage, parsley and green leafy vegetables, as well as red bell pepper, potato, are all good options to counter high uric acid levels.
